Hearing on Combating Poverty

New ways of Solidarity

We should fight together for a social Europe, where the poorest people have their place - said Anna Zaborska MEP during the conference "New Ways of Solidarity". The event took place on 30th of September 2010 in the European Parliament and was opened by Jerzy Buzek, the President of the European Parliament.

The main element of the programme was a presentation of the report on poverty entitled 'Do not deny justice to your poor people' prepared by Eurodiaconia, Caritas Europa, the Church and Society Commission of CEC and COMECE. The report contains 14 recommendations addressed to the EU and the Member States that could reduce the poverty. The EPP Group reacted positively to the report.

The poverty is one of the most serious problems of the EU: 84 million people (17 %) of the EU population are at risk of living in poverty today. That's why the European Council agreed in June 2010 on a poverty and social exclusion target of lifting at least 20 million people out of poverty by 2020.
